Before being a Commune, Anse-Rouge was a community that was created on August 3, 1889 by general Hyppolite. During that time, Anse-Rouge was nothing more than a small fishing village close to the sea. Following the Law of April 19, 1976, Anse-Rouge was first elevated to the rank of Commune of the Gonaives Arrondissement. It was then recognized as a Commune of Gros-Morne following the Law of September 19, 1978.
POPULATION: In 2005, the population of Anse-Rouge was estimated at 34,118 inhabitants. The city covers a surface of 434 km2 for a population density of seventy-nine (79) people/km2.
About 72% of the population lives in rural areas. The age composition is as follow:
38.1% of the population is under the age of 15 years old, 56.8% between 15 and 64 years old and 5.1% of the population is above 65 years old.
SCHOOLS: The education system in Anse-Rouge is supported by seventy-three (73) school facilities. Amongst those are: one (1) pre-school, sixty-five (65) primary schools and seven (7) secondary schools. Of all the school facilities, fifteen (15) are public, one (1) is of the community type and the remaining fifty-seven (57) are private. There are also two (2) literacy centers and seven (7) trade schools.
BUSINESS: There is one (1) hotel, one (1) business cooperative, two (2) currency exchange centers, forty-seven (47) lottery outlets and eleven (11) small businesses. The commune also has fifty-five (55) small stores et ten (10) larger stores.
