Founded in 1698, Jacmel is one of the most ancient cities in the country. It is located at 85 kms South of Port-au-Prince.


POPULATION: In 2005, the town of Jacmel had 146,000 inhabitants. The town covers an area of 443,88 km2 with a population density of 329 inhabitants/km2.

An estimated 36% of the population is under the age of 15 years old, 57% from 15-64, and 7% 65 and above.


SCHOOLS: The town of Jacmel has two hundred thirty-four (234) schools. These institutions are categorized as follows: thirty (30) preschools, one hundred sixty (160) primary schools, and forty-four (44) secondary schools.

Interestingly, these schools are more prevalent in rural aera than urban. An estimated one hundred ninety-two (192)schools are in rural area versus forty-two in urban.

More than 2/3 of all schools are private. There are also six (6) centers of alphabetisation, thirty (30) trade and technical schools, one (1) school of higher learning, and three (3) universities.


BUSINESS: Commerce, agriculture, and arts and crafts are the main economic activities. An estimated seven hundred seventy-one (771) commercial establishments are located in Jacmel. These businesses are as follows: three hundred twenty-nine(329) small mom and po stores, one hundred twelve (112)larger stores, four (4) commercial banks, ten (10) credit unions, nine (9) currency excnage centers, twelve (12) maisons d’affaires, and one hundred fifty-six (156) lottery outlets.
