Petit-Goave is located in the west department about 68 kms south of Port-au-Prince. The city was founded in 1625 and was the first capital of Hispaniola under the Emperor Faustin Soulouque. Its inhabitants are called Petit-Goavien.

POPULATION: Petit-Goave is a city of 138,000 inhabitants. The city limit measures 388km2 with an estimated population density of 369 inhabitants/km2.

An estimated 36% of the population is below the age of 15 years old, 57% from 15-64, and 7% from 65 and above.


SCHOOLS: Educational services in Petit-Goave are provided by two hundred sixty-seven (267) academic establishments. These schools are categorized as follows: two hundred and nine (209) in rural area, and fifty-eight (58) in urban area. An estimated 79.4% of these schools are privately held. Two (2) private universities and one (1) school of higher learning are providing education in the urban area. There are also twenty-five (25) technical and trade schools of which eighteen (18) are in the urban area of Petit-Goave.


BUSINESSES: Petit-Goave counts an estimated four hundred sixteen (416) commercial establishments in its business community. Approximately three hundred and eight (308) of these businesses are located in the urban area, and one hundred and eight (108) in the rural area.

Among these establishments are found an estimated two hundred sixty-four (264) small mom and pop variety stores, twenty-six (26) grocery stores, twenty-five (25) pharmacies, and twenty-two (22) larger retail stores.
