Leogane is located at 32 kms south of Port-au-Prince. Leogane is derived from the Indian name Yaguana where Queen Anacaona was captured and killed in 1502 by the Spanish army.
The city is crossed by four rivers: la Momance, la Rouyonne, la Riviere Gauche et Cormier.
POPULATION:
Leogane has 163,000 inhabitants. The city and the thirteen (13) rural communities measure 385
km2, with an estimated population density of 423 inhabitants/km2.
An estimated 34% of the population is under the age of 15 years old, 59% from 15-64, and 7% from 65 and above.
SCHOOLS:
An estimated three hundred twenty (320) academic establishments provide education services in Leogane. Among these facilities are: thirty-four (34) pre-schools, two hundred twenty-eight (228) primary schools, and fifty-eight (58) secondary schools.
An estimated 79% of these schools are private and 58.5% are in the rural area. There are two (2) private universities in the rural area, and forty-five (45) trade and technical schools. An estimated twenty-two (22) are located in urban area, and twenty-three (23) in rural area.
BUSINESS:
There are three (3) commercial banks and branches, thirteen (13) credit union, one (1) currency exchange center, four hundred fifty-three (453) lottery outlets, four (4) money transfer centers, and three (3) micro credit centers.
In addition, the city's business community is made of six hundred fifty-seven (657) commercial establishments reparted as follows: two hundred ninety-two (292) mom and pop variety stores, fifty-eight (58) pharmacies, forty-nine
(49) grocery stores, forty-two (42) building materials stores, thirty-six (36) beauty salons and barber shops, and (29) large stores.
